Lois Barber Obituary

Lois Frances Carmichael Barber, age 90, died Monday, October 21st, 2019 after a short illness. Lois was born in Lexington, Kentucky, a daughter of the late Katherine Byrnes Carmichael and William Russell Carmichael. She and her husband Harold made their home in West Liberty and built a house together overlooking the beautiful hills surrounding town. Lois loved listening to the songs of birds and watching the wildlife that frequently visited their back yard. She enjoyed sewing clothes for her children and preparing meals that included a bounty from Harold's vegetable garden. She loved creating beautiful paintings of flowers, birds, and the colorful Kentucky hillsides. She appreciated the beauty of antique furniture and loved music and singing. As a younger adult she was an active member of West Liberty's Homemakers and Garden Clubs.

She and Harold were founding members of the Prince of Peace Catholic Church, and Lois often brightened the chapel with arrangements of fresh flowers from her flower gardens. Later in life with her children grown, she studied theology with Loyola University to become a lay minister in the community. Lois was also active in Morgan County's Adult Literacy Program, helping others learning to read. She encouraged her own children to excel in life, and so they did as recognized by Morehead State University's Eagle Offspring Award. To help support her growing family, Lois became one of the first employees of the new Appalachian Regional Hospital, having taught herself to type at home. In addition to her parents, Lois was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-five years, Harold Lloyd, her sisters Donna Whittenburg and Chris Rexroat, and her brother Bill Carmichael.
