A.C. Jones Obituary

Andrew Calvin Jones, affectionately known as A.C., age 85, of Buskirk Road, Grassy Creek, KY, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 12, 2025, at the Wolfe County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, in Campton, KY, after an extended battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was born June 13, 1939, in Hazel Green, KY, the son of the late Orville William Jones and Edith Jane Jordan Jones.

He was united in matrimony to Mablene Hall on August 2, 1958, in Yocum, KY. This union was blessed with six children: Phyllis Ann, Carol Sue, James William, Shelia Kaye, Rebecca Jane, and Kevin Dean. A.C. worked tirelessly as a state and county highway worker, water well driller, body shop technician, and farmer, often working two or more jobs simultaneously to provide for his family. As busy as this kept him, he somehow still found time to enjoy his various hobbies. He passed his leisure time hunting, fishing, singing, and playing music on his Martin guitars. He was a world-class guitar player and was often asked to perform at events.

By far, though, his favorite activity was attending church. He was a member of Pekin Pentecostal Church in Ezel, KY. He had unwavering faith in God and never failed to tell all those he encountered about his Jesus. As a man of prayer, he prayed over each daily meal, and each night for each of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, speaking out each of their names until he could no longer remember.

And while Alzheimers might have slowly taken his memory over the decade and a half he fought the disease, it never took his sense of humor. To all those who knew him, he was a source of joy and laughter. A.C. possessed the uncanny knack for assigning nicknames and inventing languages! Up until the very end, no one knew what he would say or what language he would say it in. A family favorite was sitting around the dinner table with him, listening to his hilarious storytelling skills at work. Speaking of the dinner table, he loved food and eating and feeding his family. In his final years, he especially loved his honey buns and bananas, all washed down with his favorite Coke Zero. If anyone failed to get him these things in a timely manner, it wasn’t hard to tell he wasn’t happy, as mom, us kids, or his amazing nurses (who became family to him and us) at the nursing home can fully attest.

A.C. was preceded in death by his parents Orville William Jones and Edith Jane Jordan Jones; his son, James William Jones; his grandson Patrick McDonald; and his sisters: Emma Lou Jones, Daisy Flannery, Mazie Jones, Ninnie Jones, and Gladys Jones.

Surviving are his wife of over sixty-six years, Mablene Hall Jones; five children: Phyllis Chaney (Greg) of Grassy Creek, KY, Carol McDonald (Bart) of Hazel Green, KY, Sheila Jones of West Liberty, KY, Becky King (Jeff) of Grassy Creek, KY, and Kevin Jones (Shanna) of West Liberty, KY; one daughter-in-law, Angie Chaffin of Virginia Beach, VA; 15 grandchildren: Andrea Keaton (Nathan), Holly Tackett (Jason), Nathaniel McDonald (Ruth), Dana Daily (Trey), Tyler Jones, Whitley Smith (Henry), Kelsey Smith (Kasay), Kaitlyn Chaffin, Jonathan Havens, Taylor King (Taylor), Brittany Whisman (Jeffery), Logan Easterling (Whitney), Kacie Cantrell (Brian), Caleb Easterling, and Karson Jones; 14 great-grandchildren: Emma Keaton, Megan Keaton, Eli Tackett, Oakley Tackett, Andrew Tackett, Philip Tackett, Maggie McDonald, Patrick McDonald, Kimber Havens, Regan King, Lincoln King, Willow Whisman, Asher Whisman, and Lincoln Easterling, with two more “Doodles” on the way in February and June of this year
