Charlotte Oldfield Obituary

Charlotte Kaye Oldfield, age 60, of Mize, KY entered into eternal rest on March 18, 2023, following a brief illness. Charlotte passed away quietly at the home of her parents in Mize, with her devoted family and friends by her side. She was the loving mother of Christin Mertes-Hance and Glenn Heston Lacy.

Charlotte was born October 31, 1962 in West Liberty, KY, to Frank and the late Doris Hill Oldfield. In addition to her mother, Charlotte was preceded in death by her first husband, David Mertes; her brother-in-law, William “Bill” Gardner, and special cousin Julia Wilbur Schimmel.

Charlotte leaves to mourn her passing many loved ones, including her two children, daughter Christin Mertes-Hance (Zach) of Winchester, KY, and son, Glenn Heston Lacy of Richmond, KY; her father, Frank Oldfield of Mize; one sister, Karen Oldfield Gardner of Lexington; one brother, Alan Scott Oldfield (JoAnna) of Mize, KY; two special nieces, Arin (Parker) May and Aria, and Leah (Wes) Stacy and John Lawson; nephew Adam Gardner and Myla, and niece Anna (Kurt) Wilbert and Hank and Major; Angelina Webb of Kingston, New York, and dozens of cousins and friends that love her and miss her.

A 1980 graduate of Morgan County High School, Charlotte attended Morehead State University, coming home weekends to work in the family business. She later transferred to the University of Kentucky, earning her BA in Business Administration in 1986.

Following graduation, Charlotte moved to southern Florida, where she sold real estate, later accepting a job with the Palm Beach-Miami branch of the American Red Cross as a recruiter and fundraising liaison. Charlotte met and married David Mertes, enjoying many lazy days in the Florida sunshine fishing and exploring the Everglades. The couple later returned to Kentucky when Charlotte was needed to help with the family business. This union was blessed with a beautiful daughter, Christin Jane Mertes.

Later, Charlotte married her second husband, Heston Lacy of Grassy Creek, and the couple enjoyed life at their home at Mize. This union was blessed with a loving son, Glenn Heston Lacy, giving Christin Jane the gift of a younger brother.

An astute business woman, Charlotte, along with her brother Alan Scott Oldfield, co-founded Morgan County Propane, LLC at Mize, a company that today serves nearly a dozen counties.

Charlotte also served as US Postmaster at Mize for several years, and later as a clerk at the Hazel Green Post Office.

Charlotte worked diligently for nearly 30 years as vice-president of J.A. Oldfield & Son, the farm and agricultural supply company founded by her great-great grandfather. With Charlotte’s guidance, the store completed a major expansion and reorganization, and diversified its inventory. Charlotte just recently retired from the business due to her failing health.

Charlotte was of the Christian faith, and a member of Old Grassy Christian Church at Mize for nearly her entire life. She was a devoted member of the congregation, and was the church pianist since her teenage years. Charlotte was a highly skilled pianist, and she enjoyed playing the old hymns for the congregation. Charlotte was a lover of music of all kinds, and she learned to play the piano early in life. But, rock was her passion, though she also loved Bluegrass. Charlotte enjoyed attending concerts throughout her life and shared that love with her children and close friends.

Charlotte loved people. She enjoyed nothing more than working with all the customers and listening to their stories. People always found a receptive ear and an encouraging word, along with the bonus of a bright smile. The public she worked with trusted her, relied on her. Many were the times customers sought Charlotte’s advice before making a major purchase. It was not at all uncommon for customers to call upon Charlotte at home at night because they needed medicine for a sick cow or even a passing motorist that had run out of gas – Charlotte never turned anyone away, no matter the hour. If a person needed help, she did her best to help them. It was simply her nature, for she knew no other way.

And now O’ Lord, we relinquish or sweet Charlotte, for she was not ours, but only lovingly borrowed through Your Grace. We know she was welcomed into Heaven with open arms and great rejoicing where many loved ones awaited her.
