Joanne Carr DeWitt, age 89, passed away Tuesday, November 1, 2022 at Crestview Healthcare & Rehab in Shelbyville, KY.
Mrs. DeWitt was born on November 9, 1932, "on the night Franklin Roosevelt was elected the first time" she was quick to let you know. She was one of three daughters born to the late Marvin and Gladys Henry Carr. She was the widow of William R. "Bill" DeWitt whom she married on June 10, 1956, and was also preceded in death by her sisters, Jeannette Carr and Becky Cassity. Mrs. DeWitt was a lifelong learner who never missed an opportunity to consult a reference volume. She was a graduate of Ezel High School, received her Bachelors of Education from Berea College, and went on to obtain her Masters and Specialist in Education from the University of Kentucky. She began her career teaching high school English and retired from the junior high where she changed many lives teaching remedial reading. Mrs. DeWitt grew up in the Ezel Presbyterian Church and was a dedicated member of the Owenton First United Methodist Church. She was proud to count herself as a breast cancer survivor and was a voracious reader who enjoyed historical fiction. She was accepted in the KY Guild of Artist and Craftsmen because of her quilting talents. She enjoyed traveling with her husband and was a member of the Owen County Retired Teachers Association and the Kentucky Historical Society.
She will be missed by her children, Debra Parrish and David (Michelle Wainscott) DeWitt; her grandchildren, Robert (Lela) Parrish, Andrew (Hannah) Parrish, Amanda DeWitt, and Tyler Dewitt; her great grandchildren, Lincoln Parrish and Liam Parrish; as well a host of extended family.
Graveside service will be 2:00pm, Monday, November 7th,2022 in the Ezel Cemetery, 14476 US-460, Ezel, KY. Herald & Stewart & Halsey Funeral home, West Liberty,KY in care of graveside services.
Memorial contributions may be made to Ezel Presbyterian Church or Owenton First United Methodist Church.
