Virgie Marie Wright-Holbrook-Gambill was born Monday, May 15, 1933, in Sand Lick, KY, to the late Lonnie and Lula Cantrell Wright. Virgie always had a good story to tell about growing up in an ever-growing family. Virgie passed away January 19th. 2026 at the age of 92 years, 8 months, and 4 days.
She is survived by her son Jack Holbrook & Jenny of Flat Gap, KY; her brothers Buford Wright (Blanche) of Fairborn, OH, and Clyde Wright of NC; and her sister Shirley Wright of West Liberty, KY. Her grandchildren are Teri Holbrook, Tonya Gilvin, Andrea Hammond, Alison Ferguson, Janie Netherly, and Richard Holbrook. 15 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great granddaughter. Mamaw loved all her grandkids and was so proud of their accomplishments.
Virgie is preceded in death by her first husband, Hershell 'Bear' Holbrook, and her second husband, Chilley Gambill. Her precious son, David Ralph Holbrook. Brother Bud Wright. Sisters Doshia Wright, Catherine Smith, Ellen Allen, Gay Bolin, & Mable Young, and an infant brother, Raymond.
Virgie was a hard worker, be it in the tobacco field or in the sewing factory, where she was known for always making production. Everyone had a good time if they worked close to Virgie. She would keep everyone entertained. The most important decision Virgie made was to give her heart and life to the Lord on February 21st, 1983. She was baptized by Brother Harold Salyer and her son Jack on February 28th, 1983. She joined Flat Gap Baptist Church and has been a member since March 6th. 1983. Virgie was blessed with a wonderful singing voice and loved to sing for the Lord. She said when she was driving and started singing, she would forget to turn off to go to her house. She was one of a kind and will be missed.
Virgie has been a resident of Elliott Nursing and Rehab for the past year and a half. Such good care she received and new friends made. While she was sick in the hospital, she said, "You can move me here or move me there, but Jesus can find me anywhere!" There is no doubt in our minds that "Mamaw" is enjoying the riches of heaven, reunited with her loved ones and, most of all, her Savior.
Funeral services will be at 1:00pm, Friday, January 23, 2026, at Herald & Stewart & Halsey Chapel with Rev. Ronnie Wright and Bro. Harold Salyer officiating. Burial in the Elijah Smith Cemetery, Hwy 437, West Liberty, KY.
