Winston Gullett Obituary

Winston Gullett, has accepted the gift of eternal life in Heaven from his Lord and Savior, at age 89, on Monday, September 18, 2023. He was the loving husband of the late Shirley DeHart Gullett for 65 years and the devoted father to their only son Anthony Paul Gullett and his wife, Shannon (Leigh) of Georgetown, KY.

Winston was born in West Liberty, KY, the only son to Buford and Treva (Barker) Gullett. He married the love of his life, Shirley, in 1958. The two raised the most caring son on their family farm in Stacy Fork. Winston could often be found in one of his favorite caps farming his beautifully mowed flats, raising tobacco, tending cattle and growing a plentiful garden of vegetables and flowers.

Winston was fondly called Papaw by his three grandchildren that he loved more than anything in this world. Pallie Reed, Piper Ann, and Parks Leighton Gullett were the brightest lights in his life. His favorite times were taking them anywhere they wanted to go and giving them anything they wanted while also teaching them to value hard work. He could be found sharing pictures of these three and telling about all of their successes with anyone who would listen. He explained that they were all such great looking children because they got it from him. His grandchildren visited him often and have many memories of him picking them up from school, eating ice cream, driving his truck from his lap, telling scary stories and silly jokes, riding the golf cart and playing checkers…although he always won.

West Liberty has always held a special place in his heart. Many back home received weekly phone calls from him, and he loved coming to visit after he moved to Georgetown. His new neighbors lovingly called him the “The Mayor of Canewood” as he drove his red golf cart daily in the subdivision waving at everyone and pulling in driveways to swap stories. Winston was a dedicated bus driver for Morgan County Schools for 39 years! He served the children each day with a big smile and a lesson in life while safely delivering them to so many destinations. He never met a stranger, and his smile took over his whole face. His gentle demeanor and generous spirit centered him, and he was always thinking about things that he could do to make someone’s life better. In fact, we each got Preacher Papaw and his sermons at least once a week. He wanted to make sure everyone knew of Christ’s love for all.

Papaw relied on Matthew 11:28-30, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” He will be dearly missed and live forever in our hearts and through our acts of kindness. “Go Rest High on That Mountain”, Papaw. We promise to take time to care for others like you did. All who have met you have been blessed.
